Detroit Electric Goes Tesla Hunting, Announces Plan For Three New Models

Detroit Electric got off to a fairly rough start but that isn't stopping the company from preparing an onslaught of electric vehicles.

Announced earlier at the Cenex Low Carbon Vehicles event in the United Kingdom, the ambitious plan calls on the company to develop and launch three new vehicles in the next three years. The automaker was tight-lipped about specifics but confirmed plans for a crossover, sedan, and sports car.

This is right out of the Tesla playbook and it's interesting to note both companies started out with a Lotus-based sports car. Tesla then introduced the Model S and Model X and it appears Detroit Electric will attempt to do the same.

Little is known about the vehicles at this point but the company says development is already underway following the injection of $1.8 (€1.5 / £1.3) billion from a joint venture agreement. Detroit Electric also announced plans to significantly expand its engineering and manufacturing center to create a "state-of-the art R&D facility."

In a statement, Detroit Electric Director Richie Frost said “We have been working for a long time to put our company into a position where we’re ready to embark on this exciting journey." He added, “We have secured a solid financial foundation and are fortunate to have exceptional facilities in Warwickshire that we’re looking to expand further in the months ahead."
