New Lexus UX Crossover Concept’s Interior Welcomes Us To Hologram Tech


Lexus is drip-feeding us with more information and images of its new UX compact crossover concept as we near its world debut in Paris next week, with today’s release revealing the study’s interior. 

The Japanese brand said in a statement that the UX Concept showcases its “vision for a compact SUV of the future” while also representing “new step in the company's design journey and a redefinition of the driving experience”. 

In other words, what Lexus is trying to communicate is that, besides previewing the next -and more aggressive- step in the company’s design language, the UX hints at a future small crossover that will slot under the NX to essentially replace the unsuccessful CT200h as the base model in its lineup. 

“Our brief was to create a new genre of compact crossover; a vehicle that could create something unique from a customer's point of view―an innovative, three-dimensional, fully immersive user experience,” said Stephan Rasmussen, Designer at Lexus’ European Design Centre, ED2, which is responsible for the study. 

The UX comes with an even bolder version of Lexus’ edgy design language sporting pronounced fenders, muscular haunches, and a fin-style, three-dimensional rear light assembly that runs around the tail of the crossover, which has a coupe-like profile as all door handles are placed in the center of the car. 

Inside, the cabin is even more ahead of its time with the driver's instrument binnacle housing a transparent and floating hologram globe, and the center console, a facetted crystal structure within which lies a hologram-style display for the air-conditioning and infotainment systems.

The UX also utilizes electro-chromatic windows, e-mirror cameras instead of traditional door mirrors, and electrostatic switchgear housed under transparent covers.
